<Exhibition Outline>
CREATIVE HUB UENO ‘es’ is characterized by its unique layout that makes use of a renovated former police box, and holds a surprisingly large space for its relatively small entrance. Here, artists’ diverse views of the world unfold for visitors to take part in.
For this exhibition, Shin Inagaki has installed another “box” within the gallery, reminiscent of the food truck that used to come to Tokyo University of the Arts every day, where he worked for six years up until this year. The work is a reconstruction of landscapes taken from within the same campus through his own interpretation.
<Artist’s Statement>
Using motifs of living creatures, buildings, landscapes and other objects of interest to me, I create my work by sensing the gap between my own images and memories of these objects and the objects themselves.
Wood and wood carving have existed in Japan since ancient times and are familiar to us in the form of furniture, architecture and works of art. The wood-combining technique of yosegi-zukuri allows for the very flexible creation of a wide range of expressions taken beyond the shape of the original tree trunk.
On the other hand, due to the hardness and weight of the wood itself, ideas are not always immediately reflected in the actual form. When I’m working on a piece, I often think I have a good understanding of the motif, but then I realize I don’t really know anything about it. That is why I am attracted to the flow of time during the production process, which allows me to carefully confront each of the creatures, landscapes and everyday occurrences that are the subjects of my work.
